What Is the Sale of Chametz, and Why Do We Do It?

On Passover, we may not possess any chametz—foods made from grain that have risen, such as bread, cakes, cereals, pasta, and many liquors. Even if it’s locked away, chametz owned by a Jew during Passover becomes forbidden afterward.

To avoid losing valuable items like a Scotch collection or stored foods, Jewish law provides a solution called the Sale of Chametz. Before Passover, the chametz is legally sold to a non-Jew. After the holiday, it is purchased back and may once again be used
